General information
Every semester, the English Department opens up a whole range of courses for students in the minor subject "Sprache, Literatur, Kultur" (SLK). SLK students can - within the regulations for SLK - either attend these courses in combination with SLK courses in other departments, or decide to study SLK with a focus on English Studies, i.e. as a kind of "minor in English Studies". Curriculum recommendations for this "minor in English Studies" option can be found at the bottom of this page.
If you are planning to attend English courses as part of SLK, please note the following:
- Courses in English Studies are generally held in English and require a minimum English language level of B2 (CEFR). It is recommended that you take the English Studies C-Test for self-assessment before attending English courses.
- You can earn a maximum of 12 ECTS credits in the practical language courses in English. English must therefore always be combined with at least one other foreign language in order to achieve the required 24 ECTS for module "WP 1 Sprachen".
- Places in English Studies courses open for SLK students can be registered for in the main registration period ("Hauptbelegrunde"). Leftover places are offered in the "Restplatzvergabe".
If you are unsure or have questions regarding your planning your semester/studies in SLK, please contact the SLK Student Advisory Service.
Important information for the combination B.A. major subject "Anglistik" & minor subject SLK
It is generally possible for students majoring in "Anglistik" to also attend courses at the English Department via SLK.
However, the options for "English as a minor subject" presented here are not intended for students with a Bachelor's major in "Anglistik" and a minor in SLK.
Please note that it is not possible to include identical course formats in the major "Anglistik" and the minor SLK. This applies in particular to the following course formats, which are part of the compulsory program in the major subject "Anglistik" and should therefore not be attended in SLK (but in Anglistik only):
- all English-language practical language courses open to SLK students (Core Skills Lexis, Core Skills Grammar, Speaking Skills 1, Writing Skills 1)
- all introductory courses and introductory lectures in linguistics and literary studies
- for all other modules: courses with identical titles that are offered repeatedly in different semesters, for example seminars, lectures, methods classes ("Methodenkurse"), etc.
LSF will not prevent you from taking the courses mentioned in your major and minor subject and registering for examinations. So please keep these regulations in mind when taking courses to avoid taking part in courses or examinations that cannot be credited to you afterwards.
